THE SABIAN LESSONS AND IMPRIMATUR

Lessons 1-45 were not prepared in written form. The outlines for the initial presentations are mimeographed and available as The Occult Principles. Lessons 31-38 were developed as the book Key Truths of Occult Philosophy, now out of print but with its text mimeographed and available as one of the Sabian library sets. Lessons 39-45, originally outlines for a proposed book Key Principles of Astrology, were subsequently redeveloped in series 26 as Temple Astrology. Lessons 114-175, from June 3, 1925, through August 5, 1926, presented continuing lessons in The Codex Occultus on alternate weeks with Modern Philosophy and The Secret Doctrine, and in consequence a skip sequence of lesson numbering will be found in these three series. The studies in Grimm's Fairy Tales were interrupted and then resumed on August 12, 1926.

Extra lessons needed in order to include four of the sets in the regular philosophy-symbolism cycle are 3001-3002, added to Studies in Alice in October, 1955; 3003-3004, required by the Art of Wisdom in September-October, 1965; 3005-3011, required by Grimm's Fairy Tales in September-October, 1966; and 3012-3015 required by The Secret Doctrine in October, 1967.

The regular cycle for the Bible lessons is established in the 1945-65 reissue, and the third reissue of the biblical studies in the same order begins with The Promised Land on February 8, 1965.

The regular cycle for the philosophy-symbolism lessons is not established until after the third reissue of the various series, since a longer period of adjustment has seemed wise in achieving a full spread of the studies in Plato, Plotinus and Aristotle. These were presented originally through a concentrated attention to each in 1929-34, 1934-40 and 194045 respectively, but this arrangement gives too specialized a character to different phases of the cycle. Conversely, however, keeping several other groups of related studies in relatively close sequence has proved helpful as an aid to general balance in the approach to the Eternal Wisdom. The third cycle begins with Plato's Republic on October 11, 1965. Grimm's Fairy Tales is added to the cycle at that time, starting on April 11, 1966. In the fourth cycle, and as necessary in subsequent cycles to keep a starting philosophy lesson on or near October 17th, its twenty-seventh lesson will be omitted. Ibn Gabirol's Source of Life starts in the third cycle on October 17, 1966, and with the fourth cycle and thereafter this fundamental series in Sabian insights will be the beginning point in assigning philosophy-symbolism lessons to their dates. Following the Ibn Gabirol studies in 1966 The Secret Doctrine is added to the cycle, starting on April 17, 1967. In the third cycle Plato's Banquet and Plotinian Destiny exchange position. At the threshold of the fourth cycle Aristotle's Taxonomy and Plato's Republic exchange position.

Virtually all lesson series are used ultimately in the philosophy-symbolism and Bible cycles on the one hand, or on the other are included in the twenty-four issued in an individual sequence to each student in the astrology discipline and the five supplied to acolytes similarly. Conceptual Training and Modern Philosophy are superceded by more detailed expositions of Plotinus and academic philosophy, respectively. Sabian Fundamentals is given to each new acolyte as he signs his pledge with the Assembly. Chaldean Initiation and the Codex Occultus are specialized subject matter, but are available for supplementing the other studies.
